Bust of Alexander the Great

Bust of Alexander the Great

A double life-size Portland stone bust of Alexander the Great circa 1705 by the Burundian sculptor, Claude David.

Provenance: the parapet of the south front, Longleat House, Wiltshire.

This bust formed part of a complete figure of Alexander in the guise of Mars which was part of a suite of eight early 18th Century statues by the artist on the roof of the house. The complete figure was removed from the parapet in the 1930’s probably for reasons of stability and thereafter lay in the stonemason’s yard at Longleat.
